Many donors find that establishing a scholarship to provide a promising young woman all the benefits of a Sacred Heart Academy education to be very meaningful. Many choose to name their scholarship as a tribute to or in memory of a loved one or to create a legacy. A class or team scholarship is a great way for a group of alumnae and/or parents to continue the legacy of a SHA education and create the SHA experience for others.
Scholarship benefactors are invited to the annual scholarship awards ceremony to present their scholarship and meet the recipient and their family. Benefactors are also invited to attend graduation and other events to interact with their scholarship recipient. These interactions are customized to meet a benefactor’s interests.
A permanently endowed scholarship can be established with a gift of $25,000 or more which will provide countless young women with financial support to attend Sacred Heart Academy. Gifts of this size are invested and the interest each year is awarded to a deserving student(s) while the principal continues to earn interest. Gifts can be made through pledges of up to five years.
Mary Fox Sullivan '55 Scholarship
Alumna Mary Fox Sullivan ’55 recently established the Mary Fox Sullivan ’55 Scholarship to recognize academic achievement for an incoming student whose family may not otherwise have the ability to pay for a Catholic education.
Mary reflects, “I was so fortunate to be a student at Sacred Heart. I had a friend who was the oldest of ten kids. Her parents wanted all of the kids to attend Catholic schools and my friend chose Sacred Heart. She was always so worried about the financial strain on her parents; that stayed with me all these years… I just want to do what I can to help the next girl.”
The Schumacher Family
Barbara Schumacher Klocke ‘56 recollected that in 1942 her eldest sister Mary Lou Schumacher Gerold ’46 received a scholarship making it possible for her to attend Sacred Heart Academy. Her parents were committed to giving the same opportunities to all of their children and by allowing Mary Lou to attend SHA they accepted the sacrifice necessary to send their next five daughters as well. To honor their parents and acknowledge the sacrifice that was made for their education, the Schumacher children established the Gerard R. and Mary Louise Schumacher Memorial Scholarship. In this way they are able to replicate the generosity that began their family’s long legacy at Sacred Heart Academy.
