Judy Marcella had a distinguished career as an academic and writer. She was the oldest of eight siblings in a household that prized education and music. A graduate of Rosary Hill College (now Daemen University), she received her master’s degree in Latin American literature from Syracuse University and also studied at the University of Puerto Rico. Judy won the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to study at the Central University of Ecuador, where she focused on social protest literature. There she also met Gabriel, her future husband, and partner in the study of Latin America. She enjoyed writing about seventeenth-century Lima, Peru. During her career she taught Spanish at Dickinson College and Messiah College. Judy was a citizen of the world, promoting American engagement with the countries of Latin America. Her achievements exemplify the impact of a strong liberal arts education, the importance of communicating across cultures, and the pursuit of social justice at home and abroad.
The Judith Ferraro Marcella '60 Scholarship was started in her memory by her husband, Gabriel and her family.
