Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart is excited to announce that we have been designated as a Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. With the full support of the Board of Directors, in March of this year, SHA submitted a comprehensive application to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization that required us to establish our plan for the introduction and integration of this rigorous program into our school. That application has been accepted resulting in our designation as an IB Candidate School. Over the next 12-14 months, SHA will continue its self-study (guided by an IB consultant), send appropriate faculty and administrators to IB trainings, and welcome an IB evaluation team to determine our readiness for this intensive and comprehensive program. Pending official acceptance, SHA will be in a position to introduce the Diploma Program in September of 2020 for select members of the Class of 2022* and will be the only non-public school in the Greater Buffalo Region offering the IB Diploma Program.
Highlights of the IB Diploma Program:
Internationally recognized college preparatory two-year (11th and 12th) curriculum, which primes students to enter college with the skills needed to be life-long learners and leads to a diploma that is recognized by the world’s leading universities.
Designed from a global perspective, it challenges students to be conscientious consumers and producers of knowledge. In the era of global citizenship, attaining core multicultural competencies is no longer a luxury, it is a requirement of this generation.
Students take seven IB courses, spanning the two years and culminating with IB examinations. The program also requires students to dedicate significant out of school hours to individual projects in the arenas of Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS). Finally, students will submit an extended essay which will be the culmination of their own research in an area of further, independent study (described by some as a “high school dissertation”).
*Due to the rigor of the program, participation in the IB Diploma Program will be based upon coursework, grades and an application process. Eligible students will be invited during the second half of their freshman year, which will allow them to prepare throughout their sophomore year for the demands of the program.
