Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart
Ceremonies, Celebrations, & Traditions
At least once a month the Sacred Heart Academy community gathers to celebrate liturgy and the Eucharist together. Students, faculty and staff take primary roles in the planning and celebration of Mass.
Afternoon assemblies are held throughout the academic year. Students enjoy a wide variety of cultural, educational, and entertainment presentations. Assemblies are designed to expose students to the rich diversity of the world around them and are often sponsored by the Student Council.
Junior Ring Ceremony
Every fall, a special ceremony is held at which SHA juniors receive their class rings while surrounded by family, faculty, staff, and friends.
Christ the King Ceremony
In recognition of SHA’s dedication to the Sacred Heart, every year the senior class honors Jesus as King of our hearts, our Academy, and the world. This beautiful, creative, candlelit celebration is presented to the entire student body and their parents. It consists of readings, prayers, and songs in honor of Christ our King.
Mother-Daughter Communion Breakfast
This Sunday morning tradition provides an opportunity for students and their mothers or important female mentors to spend time together reflecting upon their special relationships. A unique liturgy focuses on the exceptional and often complex bond between mothers and daughters.
All students, together with their fathers or special father-figures, are invited to this delightful evening of dinner and dancing.
Every year on the first Sunday in June, the Alumnae Association welcomes the graduating senior class into the organization and the next stage of their relationship with SHA. During this wonderful ceremony, a senior selected by her classmates receives the Alumnae Award for demonstrating outstanding dedication to SHA’s goals and philosophy.
Dressed in white gowns and carrying a dozen long-stemmed red roses, seniors receive their diplomas, celebrate their time together at SHA, and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that await them. This impressive and moving graduation ceremony takes place at the University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts.
In the true spirit of our Franciscan values, students hold an annual walkathon to raise money for SHA and local charitable organizations. All members of the SHA community participate in this festive event. Students vote to select the Academy projects that will be funded and the charities that will receive donations. Since 1992, SHA students have raised many hundreds of thousands of dollars for school enhancements and for the community at large.
This long-standing tradition energizes the student body with a Student Council-sponsored week of entertaining events, friendly competitions, and spirit-boosting activities.
