The Student Council at SHA is the body and spirit of student leadership. In addition to planning school-wide events, organizing special projects, and representing the students of SHA on official school business matters, the Student Council is also responsible for selecting each school years theme. After the election of Student Council Officers each spring, the new leadership team selects a theme for the coming year and develops the artwork for the official school folder. (Currently, Sacred Heart is the only private school in the area that features a student-produced folder.) The folder is distributed to the SHA student body and staff on the first day of school in the fall and serves to guide the students and staff throughout the year. The folders original design and art work often becomes the symbol for the year itself and often represents what the student leaders hope to accomplish.
Friday afternoon assemblies provide playful dramatic relief for the students, faculty and
staff of Sacred Heart. From string quartets to Sumo wrestlers, choral groups to cryogenics, serious health and social issues, assemblies promise to soothe the soul, enrich the mind, or tickle the funny bone. Students may be surprised by a visit from the Buffalo Sabres or Lucy the llama from the Buffalo Zoo.
This traditional event invites all students, with or without dates, to gather in semi-formal attire for an evening of dancing and celebrating the Christmas season. A souvenir decorated according to the special theme chosen for the dance is included with each ticket. Past themes have included "Millennium Magic, "Tinsel Twilight, and "SHA Bells Ring.
Just as the mid-winter blues are starting to set in, Student Council comes to the rescue with Spirit Week! Major highlights of the week include dressing up and dressing down, riotous assemblies, and friendly competitions between homerooms and classes. The traditional Karaoke Contest on the last day of the week has grown to an extravaganza of Broadway-like proportions.
Each morning the Student Council Officers lead the school community in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Officers also announce birthdays and promote current "happenings" in the school. Funding for Student Council activities is achieved primarily through the unceasing, relentless, and consistent refilling of the Pepsi machine by the officers.
