SHA's Super Seniors -- WNY Academic Team Members, WNY Scholar-Athletes
Business First has selected Emily Ludwig and Meredith McCaffrey to their WNY Academic Team. Only 100 students in Western NY were tapped for this honor.
Each year the Buffalo News honors Western NY seniors who have excelled both in academics and on the playing field for designation as Scholar-Athletes.

Varsity Basketball Wins MML Championship for 4th Consecutive Year
Oh sweet victory! Cardinal O'Hara loses their first game of the season to the Lady Sharks, and Sacred Heart brings home their 4th consecutive MML trophy with a convincing 53-32 win.

Don't Miss SHA's Spring Drama: March 22 and 23
SHA will hold its spring drama, "A Home for Stray Cats" on Friday, March 22, and Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 7:30 pm in the school's auditorium.
Pre-sale tickets are available in the Main Office at a cost of $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $6 and $8. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance.

Sacred Heart Academy to Host Forensics Science Competition on March 16th
Nearly 100 WNY high school students will take part in a Forensics Science event at Sacred Heart Academy from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2013. This event is a component of the Buffalo Independent Secondary School Network’s (BISSNET) STEAM Academy.

SHA's Megamusical, "Nunsense", is a 2013 Kenny Award Finalist
This year's musical is up for a Kenny Award, the WNY version of Broadway's Tony Award and the equivalent to the movies' Oscar Award.
The Kenny Awards Ceremony will be on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 4 pm at Shea's Performing Arts Center. Tickets will be sold through the school or can be purchased at the Shea's Box Office.

SHA's Golf Team Completes Undefeated Season; 3 Qualify for States
Six members of SHA's Golf Team competed in All-Catholics on Sunday, September 30, at Rothland Golf Course. Three qualified for the State Tournament to be held in June 2013.

MMHSAA Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Tryout Information
Any girl wanting to play Varsity Ice Hockey for the Monsignor Martin League should be ready to tryout on October 29, November 1, and November 6.

After School Science Club and Mother-Daughter Book Club for Girls in Grades 6 and 7
SHA Biology teacher Melanie Whitney will lead 15 after school lab sessions for girls in grades 6 and 7 during the 2012-13 school year. Cost is $150.
SHA teacher Sheila Lyons will lead 4 Sunday afternoon book club sessions (October 21, December 9, February 10, April 14) from 3:30 pm - 5 pm for ten girls and their mothers. No cost.

Voting Closed at "Give with Target"
Target stores have met their goal of $2.5 million in support to schools before the September 8th deadline so voting is now closed. Thanks to everyone who cast their ballot for SHA. We received 508 votes and earned $500 in gift cards.

4 SHA Golfers Help Monsignor Martin Team Capture Second Place at States
Four members of SHA's golf team plus one student from Nardin compiled a score of 422 strokes to take second place at States on June 4 as the Monsignor Martin Team from Buffalo.

SHA Hosts Production of "The Blue Rose"

Mock Trial Team Places 3rd in State Finals
After winning Erie County's Mock Trial tournament, the Sacred Heart Mock Trial team was victorious again at the regional Mock Trial tournament held in Mayville on April 30, 2011, where SHA earned the opportunity to represent the Western New York region in the final competition for the state title. Six regions in New York State participated in this tournament held in Albany on May 22-24. SHA's Mock Trial team finished third, just out of the final trial to determine the State title.

Jena Abati '10 Headed to National Voice Competition
Jena Abati, soprano, will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 27, 2011 to compete in the MTNA National Competition Finals. A freshwoman at Eastman School of Music, she qualified for the Nationals by being selected as the MTNA Eastern Division Winner.

SHA's Musical: "Annie" Wows Crowds
This year's musical was truly a SHA family production which entertained everyone who attended. All 3 children of SHA's Head of School, Ms. Demert, were in the cast as were the daughters of Mrs. Szalach and Mrs. Michienzi as well as the son of Mrs. Fischer.

3 SHA Senior Athletes Sign Letter of Intent to Play College Sports
Emily Litwin (volleyball), Sarah Pawlak (basketball), and Caitlyn Colucci (softball) signed a letter of intent on November 16th to play college sports with Channel 2 News in attendance.

Four SHA Swimmers Compete at States
SHA's Swim Team had an amazing season this year. During the season, Freshwoman Aleza Epstein qualified for 4 events at the State Swim meet. She has qualified in the 50 & 100 freestyles, 100 butterfly, and 200 IM. She will swim the 50 free and 100 butterfly at the State Swim meet. Junior Alex Doody also qualified for 4 events at the State Swim meet. She has qualified in the 50, 100, 200, & 500 freestyle events. She will swim the 100 and 200 freestyle at the meet. Throughout the entire season, the 200 free relay team composed of Seniors Caroline Niederpruem and Sarah Mastrandrea plus Junior Alex Doody and Freshwoman Aleza Epstein have been reaching to qualify for States. At the All-Catholic Championship Meet they did, and they will swim in that relay at the meet!
The State Swim meet is this Friday and Saturday, November 19-20, at the ECC Flickinger Center. Admission is $8.00. Swimming starts at 12:00 p.m. on Friday and finals start at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.

SHA's Varsity Volleyball Team Plays for State Championship
Sacred Heart's Varsity Volleyball squad competed on November 13 and 14, at York College in Jamaica, NY, in the NYSCHSAA Championships. SHA advanced to the Championship Match with a thrilling five game match against St. Francis Prep. SHA was down two games to none before they won the next three games to win the match to go to the Finals.
In the Finals, SHA lost to St. Anthony's (Rockville Center) who were the defending State Champs. This is the first time SHA has advanced to the Championship Match since winning the State Title in 1988. Congratulations, ladies! Way to go!!

Susan Eckert Bourque '66 and Karen Eckert '68 Meet with President Obama
Susan Eckert Bourque and Karen Eckert sat down and chatted with President Obama when he was in Buffalo on Thursday, May 13. They, along with other families who lost loved ones on Flight 3407, are pushing for new requirements for more pilot training and more experience in the cockpit. Having a meeting with the President means the White House is listening to their suggestions.

Caitlin Powalski '04 Published
Caitlin Powalski, a member of SHA's 2004 graduating class and a 2009 University of Rochester graduate, has the distinction of having her research published in Rochester History's Fall 2009 issue. She held a booksigning and lecture on April 18, 2010, at the Bausch & Lomb Public Library Building of the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County.

Sarah Pawlak '11 Receives Numerous Accolades
It has been an exciting month for Sacred Heart junior Sarah Pawlak with numerous accolades for her sports and academics coming her way..
Being selected as Channel 7's Athlete of the Week brought a film crew to SHA where Sarah showed the cameraman her shooting touch while Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach Debbie Laux talked about Sarah's leadership role on the Lady Sharks and their 22-5 season which ended at the Class A State Finals in NYC.
Sarah also was named to the 2010 Girls All-Bee Basketball First Team by the Amherst Bee and chosen for the 2010 Girls All-WNY Basketball Second Team by the Buffalo News. To top this off, Sarah was recently inducted into SHA's National Honor Society with a 3.8 GPA.

Jena Abati '10 Shines at Young Artist Auditions
SHA senior Jena Abati is a member of Chamber Singers and has been taking private music lessons for years. Her talent was recognized by the Rochester Philharmonic League's Young Artist Auditions Committee at the March 14th Young Artists competition where she won two awards for her outstanding vocal performances.

SHA English teacher, Nancy Brady, to receive Liberty Bell Award on April 23
Each year the Board of Directors of the Bar Association of Erie County selects deserving people who have strengthened the American system of justice under the law. In 2010, three Mock Trial coaches: Nancy Brady (SHA), Ronald DiNicolantonio (Clarence HS), and Mary Knab (St. Francis) will be honored at the annual Law Day luncheon on Friday, April 23, with the Liberty Bell Award, the highest award bestowed by the Bar Association to non-lawyers.

Sacred Heart faced St. Anthony's of South Huntington on Sunday, March 14, in NYC with the NY State Catholic HS Class A Championship on the line but came up short losing 44-55.
