Curriculum
Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart offers an integrated and diverse
curriculum geared to meet the needs of the college-bound student.
Through academic rigor, leadership development and the integration
of learning through service, our curriculum seeks to educate
the whole person and develop knowledge based on critical thought
and understanding. All of our students are challenged to develop
well-rounded educational backgrounds and are encouraged to discover
their own academic and civic passions through the opportunities
provided at SHA both inside and outside the classroom.
Upon enrollment, every student is placed in Regents or Regents
Honors courses taught by SHA faculty members. Upon the fulfillment
of specific requirements students may subsequently register
for Advanced Placement courses offered at SHA or for certain
distance learning classes offered through Daemen College. The courses offered through Daemen carry
college credit, and such classes play an integral role in the
academic success of many SHA students.
Advanced Placement and college-credit courses available to
our students include:
- American History
- American Sign Language
- Biology
- Calculus
- Chemistry
- Digital Media Design
- English Language and Composition
- English Literature and Composition
- Entrepreneurship
- French
- Government/Economics
- Physics
- Spanish
- World History
Additionally, SHA offers exceptional opportunities for students
wishing to pursue musical, performing, and visual arts.
Religious education is valued as an integral component
in the SHA curriculum and as such, each student is required
to enroll in one Religious Studies course every semester.
These courses serve to educate students about the many facets
of religion and the role of religion historically as well
as in our contemporary lives and society. The major areas
of study include the Scriptures, the Sacraments, and Church
History, but students also explore an array of topics including:
social justice, morality, World Religions, prayer, womanhood,
and Christian life choices.
Finally, our Summer Reading program serves as an opportunity
for our students to build strong foundations in literature
and language skills. Having students engage with assigned
readings throughout the summer helps our students maintain
their academic competency during the extended vacation and
it also ensures that our graduates leave SHA with a well-rounded
educational base and solid communication skills. Selections come from across the curriculum including social studies, English, Religious Studies, and Leadership Studies. Students are evaluated on these readings in September of each year.
In addition to required courses, Sacred Heart Academy offers
