SHA Swims With "Heart" at All-Catholic Championship

                             SHA - 227            Nardin - 236

Sacred Heart's swim team only lost 2 meets this year just like last year with both losses to Nardin, the eventual MML champs.

The Lady Sharks were psyched on November 8 at All-Catholics; they were convinced they could pull off an upset and beat their nemesis once and for all if they swam their personal best.   With all the amazing swims and records being broken, it really was Sacred Heart's night. You had to believe even though they came up short.  Nardin captured the Monsignor Martin title but by a mere 9 points. 

SHA's first place finishes:

Awards:

  • Rebecca Winnert was named the MVP swimmer of the meet (an award given by the officials).  She won the 200 freestyle (1:58.05) and the 500 freestyle (5:15.67) in times which qualify her for the New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for November 18-19 at the Flickinger Center.
  • Aleza Epstein broke the All-Catholic meet record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.59 (also a school record).
  • Alexandria Doody, Therese Mastrandrea, Rebecca Winnert, Aleza Epstein broke the All-Catholic record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:40.76 (also a school record).
  • Alexandria Doody, Rachel Kuechle, Rebecca Winnert, Aleza Epstein broke the school record in the 400 free relay.

Qualifying for the New York State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships:

  • Rebecca Winnert - 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle
  • Alexandria Doody - 200 IM, 50 free, 100 free
  • Aleza Epstein - 100 butterfly
  • Alexandria Doody, Therese Mastrandrea, Rebecca Winnert, Aleza Epstein - 200 free relay

 

                                  SHA - 54            Holy Angels - 38

On Halloween (October 31) the Lady Sharks "treated" themselves to a decisive win over Holy Angels. Three SHA swimmers set Buffalo State Pool Records!  Alexandria Doody set the pool record in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.87. Rebecca Winnert set a pool record in the 500 free with a time of 5:13.36. Rebecca also set a new SHA

school record with that swim. Aleza Epstein set a pool record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.72, and she also set a new SHA school record with that swim. Alexandria and Rebecca also qualified for the New York State swim meet. They both qualified in the 200 freestyle and Rebecca qualified in the 500 also!

SHA had more great swims throughout the meet. Wins included:

                                     SHA - 57             Mt. Mercy - 37

SHA swimmers had another great meet on October 27 versus Mt. Mercy taking first and second place in almost every single event.

  • The medley relay of Brigid Treverton, Gabrielle Kistner, Julianne Taggart, and Julia Liberto took first place and the relay of Rachel Keuchle, Lauren Stitch, Mary Dobbins, and Gretchen McCaffrey took second.
  • Sara Costello and Annie Rose Kostrzewski took first and second place in the 200 freestyle.
  • Alexandria Doody and Gabrielle Kistner took first and second place in the 200 IM.
  • Aleza Epstein and Hannah Floss took first and second place in the 100 butterfly.
  • Therese Mastrandrea and Annie Rose Kostrzewski took first and second place in the 100 freestyle.
  • Rebecca Winnert and Sara Costello took first and second place in the 500 freestyle.
  • The 200 free relays of Julia Liberto, Gretchen McCaffrey, Anna Herberger, and Annie Rose Kostrzewski took first place while the team of Kaitlyn Aquino, Maddie Gosch, Mary Dobbins, and Rachel Kuechle took second.
  • Lauren Patterson and Rachel Kuechle touched first and second in the 100 backstroke.
  • Gabrielle Kistner and Lauren Stitch took first and second in the 100 breaststroke.
  • The 400 free relay of Aleza Epstein, Kaitlyn Aquino, Mary Dobbins and Brigid Treverton took first and Lauren Patterson, Hannah Floss, Katrina Flagler and Sara Costello took second.

 

                                     SHA - 57              MSM - 37

The Lady Sharks beat Mt. St. Mary on October 20 by 20 points as SHA had many outstanding swims, winning almost every single event!

Some great swims included:

  • The medley relay of Therese Mastrandrea, Gabrielle Kistner, Aleza Epstein, and Annie Rose Kostrzewski placing first
  • Alexandria Doody taking first place in the 200 and 500 freestyles
  • Aleza Epstein taking first in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly
  • Julia Liberto taking first in the 100 freestyle
  • The 200 free relay of Julia Liberto, Gabrielle Kistner, Rachel Kuechle, and Alexandria Doody finishing in first place
  • Therese Mastrandrea finishing first in the 100 backstroke
  • Gabrielle Kistner finishing first in the 100 breaststroke
  • The 400 free relay of Alexandria Doody, Rachel Kuechle, Julia Liberto and Therese Mastrandrea taking first place

 

                                        SHA - 44           Nardin - 50

The SHA Lady Sharks fell to Nardin, the MML leaders, once again on October 13.  Their only losses last season and this season have been at the hands of the Nardin Gators.  This time the score was 3 points better for Sacred Heart as there were many fantastic swims.

Freshman Rebecca Winnert and Senior Alexandria Doody took first and second place in the 200 and 100 freestyles.  Sophomore Aleza Epstein placed first in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. 

The 400 freestyle relay of Alexandria Doody, Rebecca Winnert, Rachel Kuechle and Aleza Epstein not only took first place but also set a new school record with a time of 3:52.35.

Sacred Heart defeated Holy Angels on Thursday, October 6, with an amazing meet winning every single race.  Our first places included:

  • 200 medley relay: Therese Mastrandrea, Gabrielle Kistner, Megan McDonald, Alexandria Doody
  • 200 freestyle: Rebecca Winnert
  • 200 IM: Therese Mastrandrea (first),  Julia Liberto (second place)
  • 50 freestyle: Alexandria Doody

SHA Swimmers Challenge Themselves with Extra Meet

The SHA swim team drove down to Victor in Rochester to compete against Victor's Varsity girls swim team.  SHA lost to Victor, but still had some amazing swims from the meet.  Senior Alexandria Doody was the only swimmer to win her individual events.  She placed first in the 50 free (:26.21) and 100 free (:56.47).  The 200 freestyle relay of Alexandria Doody, Therese Mastrandrea, Rebecca Winnert, and Aleza Epstein was the only relay to take first place, finishing with a time of 1:45.82.

 

Lady Sharks Compete in New Hartford Invitational with Impressive Results

On Saturday, September 24, ten SHA swimmers competed in the New Hartford Invitational Swim Meet. Seniors Alexandria Doody and Annie Rose Kostrzewski, Juniors Rachel Kuechle and Therese Mastrandrea, Sophomores Kaitlyn Aquino and Aleza Epstein, and Freshwomen Sara Costello, Hannah Floss, Lauren Patterson and Rebecca Winnert represented Sacred Heart at the meet.  Overall SHA had a lot of great swims and a fun meet!

  • SHA's 200 Medley Relay of Therese, Alexandria, Aleza, and Rebecca placed 3rd overall while the relay team of Lauren, Kaitlyn, Hannah, and Annie Rose placed 17th.
  • In the 200 freestyle, Rebecca Winnert placed 2nd, Alexandria Doody placed 5th, and Sara Costello placed 36th.
  • In the 200 IM, Aleza Epstein finished in first place, and Kaitlyn Aquino finished 19th.
  • In the 50 freestyle, Rachel Kuechle finished 24th, Annie Rose Kostrzewski finished 27th, Sara Costello finished 33rd, Lauren Patterson finished 37th and Hanna Floss finished 48th.
  • Aleza Epstein finished 2nd in the 100 butterfly.
  • In the 100 freestyle, Alexandria Doody finished 5th, Therese Mastrandrea finished 13th, Annie Rose Kostrzewski finished 30th, Rachel Kuechle 33rd, and Hanna Floss 47th.
  • Rebecca Winnert placed 2nd in the 500 freestyle.
  • SHA's 200 free relays finished 2nd (Alexandria, Therese, Rebecca and Aleza) and 13th (Rachel, Kaitlyn, Sara, and Annie Rose).
  • Therese Mastrandrea finished 4th in the 100 backstroke while Lauren Patterson finished 27th.
  • Kaitlyn Aquino placed 18th in the 100 breaststroke.
  • SHA's 400 free relay team (Sara, Hanna, Lauren, Rachel) finished in 16th place.

 

                                            SHA - 58           Mt. Mercy - 30

On September 22 the Lady Sharks swam to their second victory of the season with a convincing win over Mt. Mercy by recording several one-two finishes.

The 200 Medley relay consisting of Therese Mastrandrea, Gabby Kistner, Megan McDonald, and Gretchen McCaffrey took first place and in second place came SHA's relay consisting of Brigid Treverton, Lauren Stich, Rebecca Winnert, and Maddie Gosch. In the 200 freestyle SHA one-twoed the event with Sara Costello coming in first and Annie Rose Kostrzewski following shortly after. In the 200 IM Rebecca Winnert came in first with Kaitlyn Aquino in second. In the 100 fly Rebecca Winnert took home another first place with Megan McDonald coming in second. Julia Liberto won the 100 free with Kyra Sweeney taking second place. In the 500 free Therese Mastrandrea come in first with Sara Costello coming in second. SHA's 200 free relay came in first and second with the relay consisting of Julia Liberto, Gabby Kistner, Anna Herberger, and Aleza Epstein taking first, and Annie Rose Kostrzewski, Meggie White, Megan McDonald, and Alexandria Doody pulling through with a second place. In the 100 backstroke Aleza Epstein came in first with Mary Dobbins, coming in second. Gabby Kistner led the 100 breaststroke with Lauren Stich coming in second.

Alexandria Doody won the 50 freestyle with Lauren Stich coming in third.

Lastly SHA brought home both the first and second in the 400 freestyle relay with Annie Rose Kostrzewski, Kaitlyn Aquino, Aleza Epstein, and Mary Dobbins capturiong first place and the relay of Maddie Gosch, Anna Herberger, Lauren Patterson, and Brigid Treverton taking second.

 

                                             SHA - 56             MSM - 38

The Sacred Heart Swim Team posted their first victory of the season in a close meet against Mt. St. Mary on September 12.  SHA had several first place finishes: the medley relay of Therese Mastrandrea, Alexandria Doody, Aleza Epstein and Annie Rose Kostrzewski; the 200 free relay of Rebecca Winnert, Gabrielle Kistner, AnnieRose Kostrzewski, and Aleza Epstein; Rebecca Winnert in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle; Therese Mastrandrea in the 200 IM; Alexandria Doody in the 50 free and 500 free; Aleza Epstein in the 100 fly; Gabrielle Kistner in the 100 breaststroke.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Aleza Epstein, Julia Liberto, Annie Rose Kostrzewski, and Alexandria Doody placed first while Therese Mastrandrea, Rachel Kuechle, Gabrielle Kistner, and Rebecca Winnert came in second.

Another great meet for Sacred Heart!

 

                                              SHA - 41             Nardin - 53

Sacred Heart's Swim Team opened the season on September 8 against last year's MML champion, Nardin. The Lady Sharks had a great meet, but fell to Nardin 53-41, the exact score as last year's opening meet against the Gators where SHA was undefeated during the season except for the two meets against Nardin.  

Several SHA swimmers turned in amazing results.  Freshwoman Rebecca Winnert placed first in the 200 and 500 freestyle events and was a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay along with sophomore Aleza Epstein, junior Therese Mastrandrea, and senior Alexandria Doody.  Aleza Epstein finished first in the 100 butterfly and the 50 free (which she also qualified for states in).  Alexandria Doody placed first in the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke.
