Nichols Claims MML Championship
SHA - 0 Nichols - 4
Sacred Heart's season came to an end following a tough loss at the hands of Nichols in the Monsignor Martin League Championship game. The teams played an even game until Nichols struck with 14 minutes left in the first half to break the scoreless tie. The defense of Rachel Loecher, Emily Donner, and Lisa Harb worked hard to contain the powerful Nichols attack and central midfielder Andrea Waclawek moved to marking back to cover Nichols' top scorer, but with the wind at their backs Nichols struck 3 more times to secure the victory. The Lady Sharks did not give up and they earned quality chances, but shots by Remmi Zaepfel, Jenna Tomizzi, and Ali Owczarzak went wide while Gabby Bello was beaten to a through ball by the Nichols' keeper. Gillian Dougherty made 10 saves in the losing effort. SHA graduates 4 seniors: Andrea Waclawek, Emily Donner, Lisa Harb, and Molly Gibson.
Varsity Soccer Topples Nardin to Advance to MML Championship against Nichols on November 6th
SHA - 2 Nardin - 1
For the third time in 4 years Sacred Heart's Varsity Soccer Team has advanced to the Monsignor Martin League Championship game following their semi-final win over Nardin on Saturday, October 29. Nervous energy was evident early in the game as players struggled to find their passing game, but determination by the SHA forwards earned a corner kick partway through the first half that Andrea Waclawek lofted to the far post right onto the foot of an unmarked Lauren Constantino for the easy goal. Kara SanLorenzo nearly made it 2-0 when she poked a Waclawek free kick into the post just a few minutes later. Nardin tied the score 21 minutes into the second half, but Lauren Constantino answered with the game winner off the ensuing kickoff with a great individual effort that beat 3 Nardin players and the keeper just 18 seconds later. Solid defense by the entire team helped to preserve the win as 2 field players made goal line saves and limited keeper Gillian Dougherty's touches to only 1 save.
SHA meets Nichols next Sunday, November 6, at the Canisius High School Athletic Complex at noon in the Championship game.
Lady Sharks Close Out Regular Season with Huge Victory
SHA - 7 St. Mary's of Lancaster - 1
SHA wrapped up regular season play on October 21 with a convincing victory over top-ranked small school St. Mary's of Lancaster. Less than ideal field conditions proved tough for the Lady Sharks, but it did not slow them down as they took control early and never looked back. Andrea Waclawek started the scoring from Lauren Constantino followed by a goal by Gabby Bello again assisted by Constantino. SML closed the gap when the ball landed in a puddle just short of the goal line, and their attacker got to it before the SHA defense. Before the half Ali Troncone got her first varsity goal from Remmi Zaepfel to take a 3-1 lead into the break. SHA continued to control the play as senior Emily Donner scored her first goal of the season from Waclawek. Bello notched her second of the game with assists by Constantino and Kara SanLorenzo. Amanda Bruno got her first varsity goal off a long cross from Jenna Tomizzi and Troncone finished out the scoring with her second of the game from Rachel Loecher. Gillian Dougherty made 2 saves in the victory.
Another Shutout for Lady Sharks on Senior Day
SHA - 1 Mt. St.Mary - 0
Tough weather and field conditions could not dampen the spirit of SHA on Senior Day (October 20) as the efforts of Seniors Andrea Waclawek, Emily Donner, Lisa Harb, and Molly Gibson were recognized. The defense of Rachel Loecher, Harb, Donner, Ali Owczarzak, Amanda Bruno, and Mads Mascaro limited MSM to just 2 shots to help Gillian Dougherty earn the shutout.
Nichols Hands SHA Varsity Their Second League Loss of the Season
SHA - 1 Nichols - 3
3 goals in the first half of the game was all that host Nichols needed to hand SHA their second league loss of the year on October 18. SHA had a tough time in the first half getting accustomed to the speed of the game on the turf at Nichols and got caught on their heels which resulted in the Nichols' goals. SHA regrouped at halftime and put together a solid 40 minutes of soccer. Hard work and determination earned SHA their goal with 10 minutes left in the game when Gabby Bello outran her defender to a through ball and slotted a cross into the penalty box. Kara SanLorenzo got the first shot that was saved by the Nichols keeper, but Remmi Zaepfel was there to deposit the rebound into the net. Gillian Dougherty made 8 saves in the losing effort.
Nasty Weather Cannot Stop Lady Sharks from Posting Another MML Victory
SHA - 5 Nardin - 1
A day off from school and poor weather conditions could have spelled trouble for the Lady Sharks, but Varsity Soccer proved the team could play in poor conditions and still win big over visiting Nardin on October 14. Both teams struggled early with the wet, slick field. Lauren Constantino scored her team high 8th goal of the season after a scrum in the penalty box resulted in Remmi Zaepfel poking the ball out for the easy goal. The teams were locked at 1 going into the break. SHA came into the second half fired up and took charge 7 minutes in when Rachel Loecher got her head on an Andrea Waclawek corner kick. Loecher got her second of the game off a free kick from 40 yards out. Isabel Williams got her first varsity goal after stealing the ball at midfield, beating a defender, and placing the ball low and away past the keeper. Kara SanLorenzo finished the scoring with her first varsity goal after great team passing ended with Mia Lafornara sliding the ball to SanLorenzo for a hard low shot past the keeper. Gillian Dougherty needed to make just 3 saves for the win thanks to strong defense by Loecher, Emily Donner, Lisa Harb, Ali Owczarzak, Amanda Bruno, and Mads Masca.
SHA and Mt.Mercy Tie after Two Overtimes
SHA - 2 Mt. Mercy - 2
Sacred Heart's character was tested, but the Lady Sharks proved they would fight until the end in their tie against Mount Mercy on Thursday, October 6. Sacred Heart controlled the majority of the first half but needed 25 minutes before they were able to break through the defense and earn the first goal of the game. Jenna Tomizzi made a quick move around her defender and slotted the ball to Lauren Constantino who took a touch past her defender and put the ball in near post. Gillian Dougherty was called upon to stop a partial breakaway just 3 minutes later to take the lead into halftime.
SHA continued to control the game in the second half but on a narrow field could not get their attack through the defense. A great individual effort by a Mt. Mercy attacker tied the game with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. SHA had 3 quality chances before time expired but could not earn the victory.
In overtime, Mt. Mercy converted first on a free kick from 20 yards out just 2 minutes into the 20 minute overtime. SHA remained composed and continued to pressure the defense and put shots on the net. The Lady Sharks were rewarded with 3 minutes remaining in the overtime when Lauren Constantino beat her defender and passed the ball to Andrea Waclawek who buried a one-time shot from 22 yards out.

Lady Sharks Fall to Nichols for First League Loss, Record Now at 3-1
SHA - 2 Nichols - 5
Sacred Heart's Varsity Soccer Squad suffered their first league loss to league leader Nichols at Rotary Field on September 22. Nichols struck first from a free kick, only to be answered by a Gabby Bello goal a little more than halfway through the first half. High pressure at midfield resulted in a defensive giveaway and Bello went in unpressured for the breakaway goal. Nichols would earn one more goal before the break to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Mads Mascaro would earn the Lady Sharks other goal of the game with 10 minutes left thanks to composed play following a defensive clear up the middle of the field. Gillian Doughtery made 10 saves in the losing effort.
SHA Bests Nardin to Maintain Perfect 3-0 MML Record
SHA - 4 Nardin - 3
It took a strong second half from the Lady Sharks to earn a victory over host Nardin and improve their league record to 3-0. SHA got on the board 1:20 into the game when Lauren Constantino sent a cross into the box, and Gabby Bello stepped in front of her defender to deflect the ball into the net. Nardin evened the score partway through the half to take a 1-1 tie into the break. Andrea Waclawek scored just over 13 minutes into the second half directly off of a well-placed free kick from 22 yards out. Nardin came back again to tie the game partway through the half. A scrum in the penalty box following a Waclawek corner kick resulted in a Nardin hand ball and a penalty shot for SHA. Lauren Constantino calmly converted the shot only to be told she would have to rekick due to an infraction by SHA on the kick. Cosntantino converted once again for the go ahead goal. A solid individual effort by Remmi Zaepfel earned her the game winner with 10 minutes left in the game. Nardin closed the gap to one goal with 5 minutes left in the game, but the Lady Sharks' defense held strong to preserve the win. Gillian Dougherty made 6 saves in her first varsity appearance in the net.

Varsity Soccer Records Shutout over Holy Angels for First MML Victory
SHA - 6 Holy Angels - 0
SHA opened up league play with a convincing 6-0 win over host Holy Angels on September 13. Lauren Constantino opened the scoring when Ali Troncone found her running unmarked through the middle for a simple finish. Remmy Zaepfel scored her first of the day after Constantino made a run down the left side and slotted a ball through the defense to a well covered Zaepfel at the penalty spot for a goal low and away to the far post. Zaepfel netted her second goal of the game a short time later after she collected a cross from Lexi McArthur and hit a hard shot past the keeper. With less than a minute to play in the first half Lexi McArthur hit a free kick hard to the near post that deflected off the defender and into the net.
The second half saw SHA continue to control the game with smart passes that resulted in earning a corner kick taken by Jenna Tomizzi. Holy Angels got to the ball first but placed it onto the foot of Rachel Loecher who hit the net from 18 yards out. Following a 35 minute delay due to thunder and lightning, Remmy Zaepfel completed a 3 goal performance when 1-touch passing between Kara SanLorenzo and Andrea Waclawek pulled the defense away from the goal for another easy put away. Ally Dwyer and Jenna Tomizzi combined for the first shutout of the season.

Varsity Soccer Plays in Dan Durick Memorial Tournament Championship
The Sacred Heart Varsity Soccer Team took second place in the Dan Durick Memorial Soccer Tournament in Tonawanda on Labor Day weekend after beating host Tonawanda 3-1 in the first game.
Nerves were evident early, as many of the players were getting their first taste of varsity soccer. The team calmed their nerves partway through the first half when Andrea Waclawek took a free kick from deep in the corner and found Rachel Loecher's head for the first goal of the game. After several missed opportunities, Gabby Bello took a pass from Molly Gibson and snuck it past the Tonawanda keeper for the second goal of the game. Bello completed SHA's scoring with 10 minutes left in the game when Isabel Williams found her running through the middle past the Tonawanda defense. Tonawanda scored with 5 minutes left on a penalty shot that backup goalkeeper Jenna Tomizzi got her hand on. Tomizzi ended the game with 11 saves.
In the Championship game, SHA found themselves faced with a fast and physical Wilson team. Wilson struck early, 1:14 into the game, but SHA came back just 2 minutes later when a Waclawek corner kick found the head of Lauren Constantino for the equalizer. Wilson netted the game winner with a minute left in the first half after some back and forth soccer. The score stayed in Wilson's favor at 2-1 although the second half saw the Sharks turn up the intensity as they worked for the equalizer; but they could not find the back of the net. Remmi Zaepfel had the best chance with 2 minutes left when a ball from the sideline got past the defense putting Zaepfel in on a breakaway. The Wilson keeper made an aggressive play, forcing the shot wide. Freshwoman goalkeeper Ally Dwyer made 16 saves in her Varsity debut. Gabby Bello, Jenna Tomizzi, and Lauren Constantino were named to the All Tournament Team.
