Frequently Asked Questions About Academics
What are the academic requirements for attendance?
Freshwomen and sophomores must successfully complete 7.0 credits each year and juniors and seniors must successfully complete 6.5 credits each year. All students are required to take four years of religion courses and participate in the Footprints Service Program and Leadership Studies Program each year. Twenty-seven and a half credits are required to graduate. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average while taking the minimum number of credits each year.
What are the academic requirements for graduation?
Sacred Heart Academy is a Regents school. Students must receive a minimum passing score on five Regents examinations to receive a Regents Diploma and must receive a minimum passing score on seven Regents examinations to receive a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation.
Are honors and advanced placement courses available?
SHA offers honors courses in English, social studies, mathematics, and science. Advanced placement courses are available in English, social studies, mathematics, foreign language, and science. SHA also offers college level math courses through the Online School for Girls and college level foreign language through Niagara University.
Can I receive credit for ninth grade math, science or foreign language courses that I took at my middle school?
An incoming student may receive credit for foreign language if she successfully passes SHA’s placement examination. Students who pass a Regents examination with an 85% or higher in algebra will receive credit for the course and the examination. Students who pass a Regents examination in earth science or biology will receive credit for the course and the examination.
There is also a placement examination for computer technology. A successful score on this exam gives the student .5 credit in technology and allows the student to bypass SHA’s introductory computer applications course. A failing grade requires the student to take Basic Computer Applications in her 9th grade year.
If I play on a competitive sports team, do I have to take physical education classes?
Yes, New York State requires all students take physical education classes each year. Ninth graders take PE three times during a six-day cycle.
Will I have access to technology at SHA?
SHA has a computer lab as well as a computer classroom that are available for student use. The Library Media Center also has laptop computers and wireless Internet access available for students to use on Academy projects and assignments. The Library Media Center maintains several online databases for student research. Additionally, our classrooms are equipped with Smartboards for interactive, technology enhanced instruction.
Is help available if I am having difficulty in an academic area?
SHA is committed to helping every student achieve her full academic potential. Faculty and staff offer tutoring assistance for any student seeking help. Students may also arrange peer-to-peer tutoring.
