Congratulations to Alycia Pontello, Natalie Coppola, and Kacey Bougard for being named First-Team All Stars in the MMA North Division and to Sarah Healy and Christine Loftus who earned Second-Team honors.

For the first time, the SHA girls varsity soccer team advanced to the Monsignor Martin Championship game. SHA faced top-seeded Nichols who were 5-0 victors on November 2.

To get to the Finals, the #2 Sharks had to battle #3 Nardin in a hard fought Semi Final contest on Wednesday, October 29. They defeated Nardin 1-0.  Strong play by the defense including sophomore Emily Rose Conforti, junior Erica Comisso, and seniors Natalie Coppola and Ginamarie Mule enabled the Sharks to earn their third shutout this season against the high powered Nardin attack.  Senior goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke made 10 saves including a couple of key late saves to preserve the victory. The Sharks' lone goal was scored by senior captain Alycia Pontello on a penalty kick in the first half.

The Lady Sharks finished their amazing season on Thursday, October 16th, with a 3-0 shutout over Holy Angels.  Varsity's respectable 8 - 2 league record, 9 - 2 overall, puts them in second place in the Monsignor Martin League. First place Nichols accounted for SHA's only losses of the season.

On an emotional day (October 9) in which 11 seniors were honored for their dedication and commitment to SHA soccer, the Sharks earned a 1-0 victory against rival Nardin, capturing second place in the Monsignor Martin League for the first time in their history. The second place finish awards the team a bye in the Quarterfinals of the Monsignor Martin Playoffs.

It is truly remarkable when a team does not play its best yet manages to score the tough goal and pull out the victory. During the first half the Sharks were on their heels, having to play defense and sacrifice their bodies in order to shut down the high-powered Gator attack. Goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke played tough, stopping shot after shot, keeping her team in the game. Defenders Natalie Coppola and Emily Rose Conforti each played an excellent game, willing the defense to their fourth shut-out of the season. Offensive opportunities did not come easy for the Sharks, but they were able to capitalize when Sarah Healy sent a ball into the middle of the eighteen where Christine Loftus battled a defender and the Nardin keeper in order to score the game-winning goal. Devon Hornung and Emily Rodgers played tough at the outside midfield position, while Kacey Bougard and Alycia Pontello controlled the middle of the field for the Sharks.

The senior players honored during the game were Molly Schmand, Natalie Cappellazzo, Sarah Healy, Ginamarie Mule, Susan O'Rourke, Emily Rodgers, Kacey Bougard, Devon Hornung, Christine Loftus, Natalie Coppola, and Alycia Pontello.

The Sharks finished the week with 3 wins, improving their record to 8 - 2 overall and 7 - 2 in the league.

League leading and undefeated nemesis Nichols handed SHA their second loss of the season on October 2, but SHA rebounded with a convincing 5-0 over Mt. Mercy on October 6. Varsity Soccer's record is now 6-2.  The Sharks are in sole possession of 2nd place behind 1st place Nichols.

With half of the season over it is easy to get comfortable at 4 - 1 and second place in the league. However, teams play better in the second half of the season; in this league anybody can beat anybody on any given day. A total team effort was needed for the varsity soccer team to beat Mt. St. Mary's in double overtime on September 30 by a final score of 5 - 3. Goals were scored by seniors Kacey Bougard (2), Alycia Pontello, Sarah Healy, and sophomore Ashley McCormick netting her first goal in league play. It was a physical game. SHA controlled the ball but was unable to score for the first forty minutes. Mt. St. Mary's scored first on a defensive breakdown, but the Sharks responded with Bougard's first goal, off a cornerkick by Ginamarie Mule. SHA scored their second goal off a direct kick from Pontello, her first of the season. Back and forth the teams battled with Mt. St. Mary's tying the game up two more times thus sending the game into overtime. During the overtime SHA fought hard through fatigue and injuries to outside defender Abbey Merhige and forward Christine Loftus. Already missing defender Erica Comisso, captain Alycia Pontello stepped up to round out the defense. After a few scares on defense, the SHA offense got things rolling with a cross from Devon Hornung on the left to the foot of Sarah Healy, who scored for the fifth consecutive game. With the lead, the Sharks continued to attack and Kacey Bougard was able to connect with Ginamarie Mule off a cornerkick for the team's final goal and first header goal of the season. Continued strong play by goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke and sweeper Natalie Coppola keep the Sharks focused and provide the team with a spark each game.

The team is now ranked #9 in the Small Schools listing; the first time a Sacred Heart Soccer Team has been ranked in four years!

Heading into Monday's (Sept. 22) league game against rival Nardin the SHA Varsity soccer team was holding a 3-1 record and tied with a number of teams for second place in the league. It took a gutsy effort from goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke and sweeper Natalie Coppola, and a last minute goal by senior Kacey Bougard for the Sharks to solely hold second place in league play. Both teams played tough for eighty minutes, with each team rallying for a number of scoring opportunities. With injuries slowing down the Sharks, captain Alycia Pontello had to drop to the defense where she provided the team with a much needed lift. Sophomore Emily Rose Conforti had a solid game at outside defense, slowing down the quick Nardin counterattacks. Bougard scored the only goal in the game with less than 2 minutes to play after some hard work by captain Christine Loftus on the sideline. Goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke recorded a shutout.

The SHA Varsity Soccer Team bounced back from a tough loss against Nichols in a big way as they beat Mount Mercy 7-1 on their home field on Tuesday, September 16. Goalscorers for SHA included seniors Christine Loftus (2), Ginemarie Mule, Kacey Bougard, Sarah Healy, and Devon Hornung. Kacey Bougard leads the team now with 5 goals, followed closely by Christine Loftus. Bougard added 3 assists during the game yesterday. Ginamarie Mule scored her second goal off a cornerkick, which is an amazing accomplishment, and Emma Frieh notched her first goal on the varsity team. While the Sharks let Mount Mercy tie the game at 1-1, senior leadership, crisp passes, and strong finishing allowed them to put the game away. Defensively, sweeper Natalie Coppola led the attack, and again goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke was solid all around. In three league games the Sharks have scored 15 goals and allowed only 6.

The Sacred Heart Varsity Soccer Team lost a tough game to defending Monsignor Martin Champion Nichols on Thursday, September 11, by a score of 3-2. A complete team defensive effort led by seniors Natalie Coppola and Ginamarie Mule along with juniors Erica Comisso and Abbey Merhige successfully shut down Brianna Smith, who had been averaging four goals per game. Goalkeeper Susan O'Rourke made clutch saves throughout the contest, inspiring her teammates, and keeping SHA in the game. O'Rourke finished the game with 22 saves. Down 2-0 at one point, the SHA offense bounced back with goals by senior Kacey Bougard, her fourth in league play, and senior Sarah Healy, her first of the season. Alycia Pontello did a nice job at center midfield, distributing the ball, slowing down the quick counterattacks of the Nichols offense, and winning 50/50 balls. Overall a great effort by SHA soccer!

The varsity soccer team beat Mt. St. Mary by a score of 6 - 2 on Tuesday, September 9, 2008. Strong play by seniors Natalie Coppola, Alycia Pontello, Christine Loftus, and Kacey Bougard led the Sharks in a big way to open Monsignor Martin play. Goals were scored by 4 different players, with Kacey Bougard earning a hat trick within 20 minutes. Other goal scorers were senior Emily Rodgers, senior Christine Loftus, and senior Ginamarie Mule. Susan O'Rourke played an impressive game in goal.

JV Soccer Team -- Monsignor Martin League Champions for the 2nd Consecutive Year

This year the Sacred Heart Junior Varsity team found themselves in a close battle with Nichols and Nardin for the league title. Solid play throughout the first half of the season saw the Sharks shut out opponents in 5 of their games thanks to solid defensive play all around, led by sophomore captain Tori Kreuz and sophomores Kristin Przybyla and Christina Healy who split time in goal. The solid defense has helped to build a speedy attack that has been terrorizing opponents with good passing and intensity around the goal area. Led by sophomore captains Kaitley Wozer and Maddie Bartels, along with sophomore Emma Reid, the Sharks have received very balanced scoring, with nearly every player on the team recording either a goal or an assist. So it is no surprise that their intense focus and team work led the Lady Sharks to successfully defend their league title from last year.

Last 4 Games -- JV Soccer Results

October 8th vs Nardin - win 2-0
The SHA JV soccer team showed up ready to play against Nardin and left with a well earned 2-0 victory on a pair of goals by Emma Reid, assisted by Lauren Pristach and Katie Healy. The girls dominated the majority of the play, winning most of the 50/50 balls, making smart passes and runs, and keeping Nardin on their heels until the 4th quarter when Nardin turned up the intensity and earned some quality scoring opportunities. An all around solid defensive effort kept Nardin off the score board and inched the Sharks one step closer to first place.

October 9th vs Immaculata - win 2-0
On a field larger than the SHA JV team is used to playing on, the team earned themselves a hard fought 2-0 victory. Unselfish play by sophomore leading scorer Emma Reid and sophomore Nicole DeWaal gave the team the lead with a pass across an empty net to freshwoman Emilia Federice for her first goal of the season. Great passing and gritty play in the middle of the field earned SHA their second goal as Kaitley Wozer scored on a smart pass from Christina Healy. The team was able to adjust to the field in the second half and earned several quality scoring opportunities but were unable to solve the Immaculata goalkeeper for another goal. With just two games left and a 9-1 record, the Sharks have allowed only 3 goals to be scored against them.

October 14th vs Holy Angels - win 3-1

After 4 days off the JV soccer team looked rusty and out of sorts, but they were still fortunate to come away with a 3-1 victory over visiting Holy Angels.  Despite being under constant pressure and being overworked on the field by Holy Angels, SHA managed just enough offense to send their opponent home with the loss on goals scored by sophomores Nicole Dewaal and Emma Reid and freshwoman Emily Donner.

October 18th vs Immaculata - win 7-0

The final game of the season saw the JV soccer team return to playing spectacular soccer and to dominating play from the first whistle down to the last one. The team started fast and strong, taking a quick 3-0 lead on goals by Emily Donner and Maddie Bartels (2). The team kept Immaculata on their heals by attacking from both sides of the field thanks to smart passing and great communication; the Sharks earned 4 more quality goals: two from Emma Reid, another from Emily Donner, and one from Alicia Holler. The JV soccer team finished the season with an 11-1 record, having earned 8 shutouts, and won the league title for the second straight year!!
